Embarassed at the Police Station

After I left work, I headed to my parent's home for my dad's birthday. While en route, I saw what appeared to be a license plate lying on the road. So I turned around and looked, I figured I could turn it into the police station so that they could get the plate to the owner. (if you find a license plate, you can either bring it to the DMV, bring it to the police station and at least in my county, call the police to come pick it up. I learned that the last time I found a license plate). Anyway, indeed the shiny rectangular item on the road was a license plate so I dropped it off at the police station after I saw my dad.

I ended up entering the "police only" entrance to the police station. I saw a couple officers standing outside and handed them the plate. They were standing near a circular driveway. Then I turned my car around to leave- except I couldn't find the exit! So I ended up right back where I had started. Absolutely embarassing, I didn't want the officers to think I was trying to cause problems. They kindly told me where the exit gate was and I said I saw it but that it was locked. This gate basically looked like a chain link fence that opens sideways. Turns out when your car is in front of this gate, the gate will automatically open. And so it did albeit at an exceedingly low speed. I am patient but hope there is a faster "bypass speed" so that if the police have to leave the station quickly in case of an emergency 911 call, that they won't lose precious seconds waiting for that slow gate to open.

Oh the things we can learn when we try to do our bit to be a good citizen!
